Driving Test

You’ve reached the final hurdle of your driving preparation: completing the practical exam.

Booking a practical test can be a lengthy process, but cancellation tests allow drivers to pass and hit the tarmac as soon as possible. So, how do you get a cancellation driving test? What are they, and how does the process work?

Stick with Ashley Neal as we tell you the main ways to book a cancellation driving test.

What happens in a practical driving exam?

So, what happens during the test? You’ll sit with a qualified instructor for around 40 minutes (70 if you’re re-taking your exam after being banned) and work through its five parts:

  1. Eyesight check: You’ll have to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres for vehicles with a new-style number plate or 20.5 metres for vehicles with an old-style number plate.
  1. ‘Show me, Tell me’ vehicle safety questions: You’ll be asked 2 vehicle safety questions known as the ‘show me, tell me’ questions.

You’ll be asked the ‘tell me’ question at the start of your test, before you start driving, and the ‘show me’ question while driving. If you need help with the vehicle safety part of the test, visit our Show & Tell page for hints and tips.

  1. General driving ability: The examiner will then give you directions to follow as you drive in various road and traffic conditions (but not on motorways).

You’ll be asked to pull over and pull away during your test, including normal stops at the side of the road, pulling out from behind a parked vehicle, a hill start and maybe an emergency stop.

  1. Reversing your vehicle: The examiner will then ask you to do one of the three following things:
  • Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for around 2 car lengths, and rejoin the traffic
  • Parallel park at the side of the road
  • Park in a parking bay – either by driving in and reversing out or reversing in and driving out
  1. Independent driving: The last part of the test will involve 20 minutes of practical, independent driving.

You’ll have to drive for about 20 minutes by following directions from a sat nav (not your own sat nav: one will be provided for you) or traffic signs. The examiner will tell you which you have to follow on the day.

If you’ve taken plenty of Driving Lessons with a high-quality instructor, you should be in an excellent place to take your test.

But booking one can be difficult: often, there are long waiting times, and unless you book in advance, you may find yourself waiting months or even weeks after your last test to showcase your skills.

That’s where cancellation driving tests come in!

What is a driving test cancellation?

A driving test cancellation is a previously booked appointment that becomes available again because someone else cancelled their test.

These cancellations create an opportunity for other individuals to secure an earlier driving test date than the ones originally available.

What do you need to book a driving test?

Before you can start looking for a cancellation driving test, you need to make sure you have the requirements to book one in the first place.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Provisional Driving License: You must have a valid provisional driving license issued by the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency).
  • Theory Test Pass Certificate: You must have passed the theory test before booking a practical driving test.
  • Training and Preparation: It’s important to have received sufficient driving practice to feel confident and ready.

If you need extra Driving Lessons or Free Theory Practice while you wait for your test, Contact Us by filling in our simple application form.

How does the driving test cancellation process work?

The driving test cancellation process is designed to help individuals secure earlier test dates by taking advantage of test appointment cancellations.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Cancellation occurs

When someone cancels their driving test appointment, their booked slot becomes available again.

The DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) immediately makes this cancellation slot visible to other learners who are actively looking for earlier test dates.

  1. Earlier tests become available

As soon as a cancellation occurs, driving test slots that were previously booked for a later date become available.

These slots are highly sought after, as they allow learners to take their driving test earlier than anticipated.

  1. New dates are released

Once a cancellation occurs, the DVSA releases the available test date and time to their system.

These new dates become visible to individuals actively searching for earlier driving appointments.
