Passing your driving test is a big achievement, but many drivers still don’t feel confident on the road, even if they have their licence.
The adrenaline rush after passing may wear off, and the hours of studying road signs and manoeuvres can leave you as soon as you’re left to drive alone.
If you’re feeling anxious and uncertain about driving after passing, regardless of how long it’s been since you passed, Pass Plus can help you regain your confidence behind the wheel.
Today, Ashley Neal will delve deeper into what our Pass Plus course entails, its requirements, and how it can benefit you.
What is Pass Plus?
So, you’ve passed your test—congratulations!
But you’re still feeling a little underprepared? Our Pass Plus course is a training scheme that helps new drivers expand on their skills, boost their confidence, and learn essential hazard awareness to stay safe on the road.
Designed to be taken after you’ve passed your driving test, this course consists of extra driving lessons that amount to a minimum of six hours. It consists of 6 modules focused on various road and traffic situations, including motorways, rural roads, and night driving, which we’ll explore in more detail soon.
This course has been created by the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and is only delivered by DVSA-registered instructors.
Pass Plus is completely optional; there’s no formal exam at the end, meaning you can use it to better your skills without the pressure of being tested on them.
Who should do it—and when?
You can take this course at any time after passing your driving test.
However, it’s recommended that new drivers take this course within the first 6-12 months of driving, as this is when crashes and accidents are more likely to happen. The first year is when habits start to form, so it’s best to nip any bad driving in the bud before it worsens.
Pass Plus is ideal for:
- People who are nervous to drive alone after passing.
- Drivers who avoided certain routes or scenarios during lessons.
- Parents looking for extra peace of mind with their teenagers’ driving skills.
- People who want to reduce their insurance premiums.
Pass Plus isn’t about re-learning what you already know. It’s about building on it.

Breakdown of the 6 modules
Within our Pass Plus course, you’ll be taken through six modules: town and city driving, all-weather driving, rural roads, night driving, dual carriageways, and motorways.
Each one is designed to teach you how to handle various scenarios that aren’t typically covered in regular driving lessons. You must have completed all of the modules to reach or exceed the standard requirements for the course.
1. Town driving
During this module, you’ll learn how to navigate busy town centres, complex roundabouts, and built-up areas.
It’ll focus on staying alert during hectic traffic, constantly scanning mirrors, and judging the space. It’ll also focus on dealing with bus lanes, public transport, cyclists, and pedestrians.
2. All-weather driving
Driving in various weather conditions can be challenging, so this will focus on learning to navigate all types of weather.
You’ll learn how to drive in rain, harsh winds, and snow, all while keeping your cool. It also covers driving in fog and mist, the changes in stopping distances, how to use headlights properly, and what to do if your car starts to skid.
3. Rural roads
Country lanes can seem overwhelming and scary to a new driver. With sharp bends, blind corners, and narrow roads, this comes with its own set of challenges.
Our instructors will guide you through navigating all of these obstacles, including hidden dips, loose surfaces, animal pedestrians, and tractors.
4. Night driving
Driving at night can be particularly challenging for new drivers, as their vision is limited and extra caution is necessary.
If you haven’t had enough experience driving at night, your instructors will show you how to use headlights properly, judge speed and distance in low light, manage glare from other vehicles, and remain alert.
5. Dual carriageways
If your learner lessons were mainly in a town, you may not be too familiar with dual carriageways.
This module will cover merging and leaving via slip roads, positioning yourself in a lane, safely overtaking other vehicles, and maintaining a safe distance between cars.
6. Motorways
For many new drivers, the motorway is the main thing that causes anxiety.
If you’ve been avoiding motorways due to fear, we’ll help you build your confidence up. This module focuses on understanding lane discipline, how to join and leave motorways safely, how to overtake others, and what to do in an emergency.
The benefits of taking Plass Plus driving lessons
So, why should you enrol on our Pass Plus course? Here’s how these few extra lessons could help you become the safe and skilled driver you know you’re capable of:
- Boosts confidence: The main reason for taking this course is to boost your confidence on the road. The more you trust in your driving ability, the better you’ll be at navigating challenges.

- Lower your risk of accidents: Continuing your learning after you pass decreases your chance of getting in an accident. The more equipped you are in risk mitigation, the safer you’ll be.
- Potential to save on insurance: Discounts are available to drivers who complete the course, provided they are with insurance companies participating in the scheme.
