Are you preparing for your driving test? If so, understanding where you’ll be taking the test is a great place to start.

At Ashley Neal, we use the Wallasey test centre for learners who live nearby. So if you’ve booked your test for this test centre, we’ve included everything you need to know to feel prepared on the day.

Why choose the Wallasey test centre?

Located on King Street, the Wallasey test centre is a small building that handles lots of driving tests with a range of patient and skilled examiners.

The area has a mix of local streets, traffic lights, roundabouts and faster roads such as Dock Link Road and North Wallasey Approach Road. You’ll likely encounter a wide range of road types and conditions on your test.

That way, you can show a range of skills and build confidence in everyday situations, such as busier town driving to quicker decision-making on larger roads

Pass rates and difficulty

The 2024/25 DVSA data put Wallasey at 1,276 car tests conducted and 633 passes, giving it an overall pass rate of 49.6%.

While pass rates have been up and down the past few years, recent data shows that it’s above average for the national pass rate for the UK. Learners who are comfortable with changing speeds, reading road markings early, and staying composed in busier traffic will be able to adjust well here.

While it’s not the easiest or hardest test centre, you can pass the first time with the right preparation and a good driving instructor. Luckily, we have a team of highly skilled and patient driving instructors at Ashley Neal to help you build confidence for your test.

We even provide driving lessons for nervous drivers, with extra support for those who are anxious while on the road.

Wallasey test centre route

DVSA no longer publishes official driving test routes, but you can search for Wallasey test centre routes on YouTube to get a feel for the type of roads you’ll face on your test.

You’ll most likely encounter residential driving, traffic lights, roundabouts, lane changes, one-way systems and stretches where speed awareness matters more.

From King Street, many sample routes quickly move learners onto nearby roads such as Union Street, Crescent Road, Church Street, Liscard Road, and Poulton Road. These check whether you can adapt smoothly from slower urban driving to higher-speed roads without losing lane discipline, speed awareness, or forward planning

You may also be taken onto larger, faster roads such as Dock Link Road, North Wallasey Approach Road, and roads connected to the A554 corridor. You’ll be awarded for calm observation, good lane discipline, and planning ahead.

When you choose us for your driving lessons, our instructors will take you around common test routes in Wallasey to help you prepare. Book now to start your lessons.

What to expect on test day

If you get plenty of practice in before your test, then you’ve done everything you could to prepare.

It’s completely normal to feel nervous on the day, but knowing what will happen and what the examiner is looking for can help you stay calm and focused.

Aim to arrive at the Wallasey test centre around 10 to 15 minutes before your appointment so you have time to get settled before the test begins. Make sure you bring your provisional licence, as you won’t be able to take your test without it.

Once the test starts, the examiner will:

  • Check your ID and confirm your details.
  • Carry out an eyesight check by asking you to read a number plate from a distance.
  • Ask you one vehicle safety ‘tell me’ question.
  • Take you out on the road for around 35 to 40 minutes of driving, where you will need to complete one manoeuvre, such as parallel parking, bay parking, or pulling up on the right and reversing.
  • Include around 20 minutes of independent driving, where you will follow either sat nav directions or road signs.

At the end of the test, you will return to the Wallasey test centre, where the examiner will tell you whether you have passed or failed and talk you through any faults recorded during the drive.

You won’t fail because of a few minor faults, so if you make a small mistake, try not to let it affect the rest of your test. Stay focused, reset, and continue driving as safely and confidently as you can.
